Art Mongolia
is the result of many years of collaboration between Enkhbayar
Shagdarguntev (Enki) and Mike Dingle, who
met in Mongolia in 1997. Over the next two years they formed the
International Cultural Exchange Society (ICES)
in Ulaanbaatar, and San Francisco based Golden
Gate Friends of Mongolia (GGFOM)
to facilitate cultural exchanges between the two countries.
Art
Mongolia evolved
from exhibitions from the Union of Mongolian
Artists (UMA)
presented at SomArts Cultural Center in San Francisco
that were organized by ICES
and GGFOM. Over the past
several years, Art Mongolia
has organized four shows featuring prominent Mongolian artists, exhibiting
art of varied mediums - oil, water color, silk, ink and sculpture. Their
shows include:
2000
- Colors from Mongolia –
New York City (E&J Frankel Gallery) and San Francisco
(SomArts Gallery). The first collection of contemporary
Mongolian art to tour in the United States.
2002 - Zurag! Women
Artists of Mongolia - San Francisco (SomArts
Gallery).
2004 - Horses and
Resources - San Francisco (SomArts
Gallery).
2006 - The Great
Mongol State - San Francisco (SomArts
Gallery). A celebration of the 800th anniversary of the founding
of Mongolia.
Following the success
of the first two exhibitions, Enki and Mike formed
Art Mongolia in 2004 to formalize their commitment
to bring the finest in Mongolian art to North American audiences. In
addition to working with the UMA,
Art
Mongolia has developed
personal relationships with many of the finest artists working in Mongolia
today. Our website is updated often with new artists and available artworks,
as well as news on upcoming cultural events and archives of past exhibitions.
